AU Mourns Tersin Victims, UN Pledges Support-  Over 1,000 killed in Darfur landslide tragedy

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep sorrow over the landslide in Tersin village. The disaster struck on 31 August in the Jabel Marra range, reportedly killing more than 1,000 people. In a statement, Youssouf conveyed condolences to grieving families and highlighted compassion for the only known survivor. He said AU Mourns Tersin Victims and reaffirmed African Union solidarity with victims and urged Sudanese parties to silence guns and enable humanitarian access. The United Nations also expressed strong solidarity with the people of Sudan after the devastating landslide. Luca Renda, interim UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, said the international community will spare no effort to deliver aid. He extended condolences to families of the victims and explained that heavy rain triggered the catastrophic landslide.  UN and humanitarian partners are mobilizing resources and coordinating efforts to provide urgent aid to survivors.  Tersin landslide is described as one of the worst natural disasters in Darfur’s recent history.
