ICC Urges Sudan to Hand Over Al-Bashir and Haroun- -Prosecutor says Port Sudan’s authorities shelter wanted men- Khartoum Highlight
The International Criminal Court renewed its call to arrest individuals wanted for Darfur crimes. Among them are ousted president Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir, former defense minister Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, and National Congress Party leader Ahmed Haroun. Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan said the charges against Haroun are closely linked to those of Ali Kushayb. Kushayb was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Prosecution member Moiz Hadra told Khartoum Highlight that Kushayb was merely an execution tool. He said his conviction condemns the entire former Islamist regime. Hadra urged Port Sudan’s authorities to hand over al-Bashir, Haroun, and Hussein. He stressed that shielding the fugitives is itself a crime. Nazhat Khan said, “We’ve shown what can be achieved through cooperation with victims and national authorities.” She added that this moment affirms the UN Security Council’s decision to refer Darfur’s situation to the ICC. Khan said the trial of Ali Abd al-Rahman is the first of several planned cases on Darfur. She emphasized that collective determination and partnership between survivors and the international community remain vital.
This, she said, is key to ending the cycle of violence and impunity burdening the people of Darfur.
