Save the Children: Tarsin Disaster Beyond Words- Hundreds buried in one of Darfur’s worst tragedies Khartoum Highlight

Save the Children expressed deep condolences to families of Tarsin village victims after the deadly landslide in North Darfur. The disaster claimed hundreds of lives, most of them residents of the small mountain community in Jabel Marra. In a Facebook statement, the organization described the scale of loss as “beyond words” and among the worst regional tragedies. The landslide struck a remote mountain area, about 30 kilometers from Golo town, isolated by days of heavy rain. Access was only possible on foot or by animals, in journeys lasting over five hours through rough terrain. Communication breakdown delayed news of the disaster until Monday evening, though it occurred on Sunday. Search and rescue operations face severe challenges due to rugged terrain, lack of heavy equipment, and urgent need for safe extraction.
