The Kofi Annan Foundation, Amina Life Foundation, and the Maghreb African Media Center launch a new Sudan peace initiative. The African Union sponsors the initiative, which seeks to bring Sudanese parties together to discuss root causes and build peace. A high-level conference will be held Thursday in Nairobi with senior officials from Kenya, Sudan’s neighbors, and international partners.

Political figures and ambassadors from several countries will also participate in the high-level Nairobi conference. Sessions will focus on the devastating effects of the conflict, including mass displacement, famine, and the collapse of healthcare systems. They will also discuss regional security, migration, growing terrorism threats, and repeated failures of ceasefire agreements.

The war in Sudan continues, killing over 150,000 people and forcing 12 million to flee to neighboring countries. These include South Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Egypt, Uganda, and Kenya, as displaced civilians seek safety beyond Sudan’s borders.

Observers warn the conflict threatens stability in East Africa and the Sahel, fueling terrorism, arms smuggling, and human trafficking. The United Nations calls Sudan the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with millions facing famine and aid blocked by ongoing violence. Food prices have skyrocketed, while basic services collapse under the weight of war and insecurity. Kenya has played a key role in regional peace, hosting the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended Africa’s longest civil war. Kenya has also mediated several successful peace efforts across the Horn of Africa.
