Earthquake in Afghanistan Kills 800, Injures 2,800 – Khartoum Highlight – Reuters
Afghan authorities announced Monday that a devastating earthquake killed more than 800 people and injured at least 2,800 others. Helicopters transported the injured to hospitals after rescuers pulled them from collapsed homes still being searched for survivors. Health Ministry spokesman in Kabul, Sharafat Zaman, appealed for international aid to address the disaster’s severe consequences. He said the Earthquake in Afghanistan struck near midnight with a magnitude of six and a depth of ten kilometers (six miles). “We need this assistance because many people lost their lives and homes,” Zaman told Reuters. Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed 812 deaths in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar.
