Ethiopia Accuses Egypt of Paternalism Toward Sudan- Khartoum Highlight
Ethiopia accused Egypt of “paternalistic behavior” toward Sudan and of speaking on its behalf over recent Nile floods. The Ministry of Water and Energy in Addis Ababa said Egypt’s accusations about the Grand Renaissance Dam were misleading and contradictory. Egypt’s Water Ministry had claimed on Friday that the dam caused the floods in Sudan. Addis Ababa criticized what it called Egypt’s “patronizing tone” and its assumption of the right to speak for its neighbors. It said Cairo’s claims contradict statements by Sudanese authorities themselves. Ethiopia’s energy ministry attributed the Sudan floods to increased flow from the White Nile — a tributary unrelated to Ethiopia. Authorities in Port Sudan said the rising flow resulted from shifting rainfall patterns linked to climate change and war-damaged infrastructure.
