Quartet, AU Align on Sudan Peace – Khartoum Highlight

U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy, Massad Boulos, arrived in Addis Ababa and met African Union officials. Discussions focused on linking Sudan’s crisis between the Quartet and the African Union through coordinated mechanisms. The Quartet announced a roadmap last week involving the U.S., Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Egypt. It set timelines to end Sudan’s conflict and launch a civilian transition within nine months. The plan also called for an initial three-month humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire. The Quartet emphasized excluding extremist groups and the Muslim Brotherhood from shaping Sudan’s future. Port Sudan’s de facto authority rejected the Quartet’s position, claiming the war is solely a Sudanese matter. International and regional actors welcomed the Quartet’s plan, calling it a steadfast roadmap aligned with previous political visions. Umma Party leader Mubarak Al-Mahdi said Port Sudan’s response reflects Islamist influence and rejection of dialogue. Diplomatic sources told Sudan Tribune that Boulos coordinated the Sudan file with the AU Commissioner. The sources confirmed the file is now jointly managed by the Quartet, the AU, and IGAD. This development reflects wider regional and international efforts to end the war in Sudan.
