Machar Suspended, Faces Treason and Crimes Charges -Khartoum Highlight – Agencies

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit suspended his First Vice President Riek Machar in a decree read on state radio. Before the decision, Justice Minister Joseph Geng announced Machar is accused of murder, treason, and crimes against humanity. The accusations link him to alleged involvement in White Army militia attacks against SPLA forces last March. Geng said Machar and seven others, including former Petroleum Minister Bout Kang Chol, face charges related to the attacks. The attacks occurred in Upper Nile State, causing heavy losses and instability across the region. Riek Machar has remained under house arrest since those attacks.
