Red Cross: Sudan Faces Worst Cholera Outbreak – Millions Lack Access to Health Services – Khartoum Highlight
The International Committee of the Red Cross reported an unprecedented cholera outbreak in Sudan amid worsening Health conditions. José Luis Pozo, ICRC Head of Operations in Sudan, said the outbreak is the country’s worst in recent years. He warned that the crisis is aggravated by a devastating conflict that destroyed infrastructure and deprived millions of healthcare. According to Sudan’s Health Ministry, cholera killed over 2,500 people, with more than 100,000 suspected cases nationwide. ICRC field teams reported rapid spread of the disease, with infrastructure heavily damaged after more than two years of war. The ongoing conflict has left 80% of health facilities out of service, worsening shortages of water and electricity.
