Life First: Sudan’s Struggle for Survival – From the Balcony – Tahir El-Mutsaim
As we approach the end of the third year, life remains the top priority for Sudanese people. Around 12 million have been displaced inside Sudan. About 4 million sought refuge in neighboring countries, all in search of survival. Despite this, dengue fever claims many lives. Hunger grips El-Fasher and Dilling due to blockade and famine. Child recruitment is visible. One captured child soldier said, “They demanded one boy from every household.” The issue of prisoners and the forcibly disappeared is worsening. Prisoner exchanges have stopped.
The Red Cross withdrew after its convoy was attacked with gunfire two years ago. A recent appeal by 100 Sudanese figures urged the resumption of prisoner exchanges through the Red Cross. War in Sudan enters its third year. The economy collapses. The Sudanese pound loses value. Inflation hits unprecedented levels. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. Immediate solutions are needed for these crises. Finally, the “Life First” campaign launched by Sudanese media institutions is crucial. We must support it.
