A political earthquake began with the Quartet’s “Roadmap” statement offering hope to end Sudan’s war.
Quartet includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt. US Treasury followed with sanctions on the extremist Al-Baraa bin Malik militia. Also sanctioned was Port Sudan’s de facto Finance Minister, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim.
They were accused of obstructing a ceasefire agreement and fueling the brutal war. Quartet set timelines for ending Sudan’s conflict. It called for a nine-month civilian transition and an initial three-month humanitarian truce. Quartet stressed removing extremists and Muslim Brotherhood from Sudan’s destiny. Foreign ministers of the Quartet pledged efforts to support a negotiated settlement. They emphasized participation of Sudan’s Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
Civil Democratic Alliance “Somoud” welcomed the statement, calling it a clear plan to end Sudan’s conflict. It urged warring parties to commit immediately. The group reaffirmed Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, rejecting any military solution. It demanded humanitarian access and a people-driven political process. National Umma Party also welcomed the statement. It emphasized protecting Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, and ensuring immediate ceasefire.
The party urged unimpeded humanitarian aid, and a credible political process owned by Sudanese, supported internationally under UN oversight. The Federal Democratic Gathering also welcomed the statement.
It said the rejection of Muslim Brotherhood dictates reflects the real cause of war. Former Sovereignty Council member Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman wrote on Facebook. He stressed that ceasefire, unity, and civilian rule must unite all Sudanese. Federal Gathering leader Babiker Faisal said the Quartet statement is a roadmap and hope.
He warned against giving warmongers another chance as in Manama. Somoud spokesman Jaafar Hassan Osman praised the Quartet’s statement. He called it a real step toward ceasefire, aid delivery, civilian protection, and Sudan’s unity.
