African Leaders Violate Human Rights Like Colonial Powers

Khartoum Highlight- Human Rights Expert  Corlett Letlojane, Executive Director of the Human Rights Institute of South Africa, expressed deep concern about the state of human rights in Sudan. She pointed to severe violations against civilians during a workshop organized by the Humanitarian Sector of the “Somoud” coalition in Kampala, Uganda. She said African rulers violate human rights in ways that almost mirror the abuses of colonialism.

Human Rights Expert Letlojane noted that some African leaders have caused immense harm to their people. She added that a number of them turned into thieves and gang lords through their abusive practices. Despite Africa’s commissions and mechanisms for human rights, implementation is almost absent, she said. She called for accountability, trials for perpetrators, justice for victims. And an end to the harm inflicted by some rulers on Sudanese and other African peoples. Since the war in Sudan began between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, 2023, the country has witnessed grave violations. Millions have been killed or displaced. Major international organizations now describe Sudan as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster today.
