Sudan’s War Devastates Agriculture: 89% of Farmers Report Heavy Losses Khartoum Highlight

A CARE International report revealed Sudan’s war has inflicted massive damage on agriculture, with 89% of farmers facing sharp productivity declines. The survey showed 56% of farmers failed to harvest safely due to violence and insecurity. Women are hardest hit by the crisis. Smallholder women farmers suffer the most, as many men are displaced or unable to farm. Women represented 87% of respondents. The report noted women face severe financial struggles and risks of sexual violence linked to conflict in farming areas. Eighty-eight percent of respondents cited resource shortages and high input costs as major obstacles limiting women’s farming capacity.

Market collapse compounds the crisis. Sixty-five percent of farmers reported difficulties accessing markets, worsening post-harvest losses. Seventy-six percent of women farmers suffered major post-harvest losses from theft, looting, or lack of safe storage facilities. The situation threatens Sudan’s food security, with famine spreading rapidly across multiple regions amid ongoing conflict.
