UNESCO: Thousands of Sudanese Artifacts Stolen in War -Khartoum Highlight
UNESCO reported theft of over 4,000 artifacts from Sudan’s national museum and others amid ongoing war. Dr. Abdel Rahman Ali, UNESCO Sudan culture chief, said the loss harms global human heritage, not Sudan alone. He urged international cooperation to recover the looted artifacts and safeguard remaining cultural treasures. The teams visited Bajrawiya and the Royal City, both World Heritage Sites, to assess damage and risks. Ahmed Junaid Suroosh, the head of mission , affirmed commitment to protect Sudan’s heritage with local partners. The organization launched an emergency plan to support Sudan’s cultural, educational, scientific, and media sectors. Programs include training, documentation, and combating illicit artifact trafficking, in cooperation with national authorities. The mission is also working to build local capacity and secure international backing for heritage protection.
