Rights Monitor: Army Recruits for Food – Forced conscription reported in South Kordofan – Khartoum Highlight
The Sudanese Human Rights Monitor reported forced recruitment campaigns in South Kordofan. Young men were conscripted in exchange for feeding their families. The group condemned these inhumane practices.
It said they add to violations by the Sudanese Armed Forces and allied militias. Recruitment in return for food equals forced labor, the monitor said. It also amounts to a modern form of slavery. This practice puts conscripts’ lives in danger. It also deprives them of their right to a dignified life. The monitor called for an immediate halt to these abuses. It demanded accountability for those responsible. It urged the United Nations and international rights groups to intervene. They were asked to monitor the situation and protect civilians in South Kordofan.
