UN: El Fasher Civilians Face Impossible Choices- UN warns of urgent need for protection – Khartoum Highlight

The United Nations warned of worsening conditions in El Fasher, North Darfur. Civilians face “impossible choices” between siege or unsafe escape. The statement was issued by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Denise Brown. It was published by OCHA on Monday, September 29, 2025. The UN reported killings, kidnappings, and arbitrary detentions. Markets, hospitals, and places of worship were hit by indiscriminate attacks. Brown stressed international humanitarian law requires civilian protection. Safe corridors must remain open for those wishing to leave.

Those trapped in the city need protection, food, water, and essential supplies. The siege of El Fasher must be lifted immediately. Indiscriminate attacks must stop, Brown said. Clear orders are needed to prevent sexual violence and ethnically motivated assaults. She reminded leaders and fighters of their legal responsibility. International law obliges them to protect civilians. The UN also demanded protection for humanitarian workers and local responders. They risk their lives daily to deliver aid.

Brown cited the UN Secretary-General’s urgent call. He urged immediate steps to protect civilians and ensure safe, unhindered aid delivery. He also said civilians wishing to leave must be allowed safe passage.
