Human Rights Council Praises Somoud, Urges Civilian-Led Peace-  Resolution Calls for Ceasefire, Accountability, and Monitoring Mechanism – Khartoum Highlight

The UN Human Rights Council praised ongoing civilian efforts to end Sudan’s war. It commended the “Somoud” alliance and other initiatives for peace and democratic transition. The Council noted the founding conference of Taqadum in Addis Ababa last May. It also referred to the Cairo meeting of Sudanese civil and political forces in July 2024. The Council passed the resolution with 24 votes in favor, 11 against, and 12 abstentions. It praised “Somoud,” condemned both warring parties, and urged ICC jurisdiction over Sudan. The resolution demanded an immediate ceasefire and an independent monitoring mechanism. It also called for rebuilding infrastructure and launching a civilian-led political transition. According to the resolution, April 15 war crimes require ICC referral. It condemned grave violations against civilians and demanded accountability. The Council affirmed both sides violated international humanitarian law. These violations included shelling residential areas, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic-based attacks.
