Khartoum Highlight- Doctors Without Borders warns the cholera outbreak in Sudan is deeply concerning, with over 2,300 cases and 40 deaths in one week. The outbreak comes amid severe health challenges from war, floods, and heavy rains.
Sudan’s infrastructure and environmental and health systems collapsed after the brutal war between the army and Rapid Support Forces began on April 15, 2023. International organizations classify it as the planet’s largest humanitarian disaster. Cholera cases were reported in 10 of Sudan’s 18 states, with deaths in Gedaref, Kassala, River Nile, Red Sea, and Northern states.
Doctors Without Borders cites heavy rains, floods, low vaccination rates, and insecurity as key causes of the Cholera outbreak in Sudan . The World Health Organization warns Sudan’s health situation could become catastrophic. Urgent measures are needed: provide clean water, strengthen public health services, and deliver essential care to cholera patients.
